North Macedonia is among the 30 major tobacco producing countries in the world and among the 20 major exporters of raw tobacco . Data from the Ministry of Agriculture shows that tobacco comprises 20.4 percent of the total export value of agricultural and food products. Tobacco is also the crop receiving the largest subsidies from the Macedonian government compared to other crops,2 comprising a quarter of the total agricultural subsidies.
