The Economics of Tobacco Farming in North Macedonia - Policy Note (2023)

Tobacco farming is on the decline in North Macedonia. There is a decreasing trend in the number of cultivated hectares of tobacco and the number of signed contracts with tobacco buyers. The number of tobacco farmers is also decreasing: in 2020, the number of tobacco farmers was 19,702, which is less than half the number it was in 2010 (42,622). Most tobacco farmers are married, middle-aged males with a primary or secondary school education. Around two-thirds of tobacco household heads in North Macedonia are 45 years or older, while the average age of the country’s overall population is 40.1, years according to the 2021 census.
